Family Law Services

I began working in the area of family law in California while in law school working for a small firm in San Diego that handled family law cases almost exclusively.  California is a community property state.  As such, my transition to Arizona, also a community property jurisdiction, was much easier.  Upon being admitted to the State Bar of Arizona in January 2008, I immediately opened my own office practicing exclusively in the area of family law.  I have now practiced exclusively in the area of family for approximately 9 years.

I have been able to evolve my practice from handling simple family law cases to successfully handling complex family law cases and appeals, including having both reported and memorandum appellate decisions from Division One, Arizona Court of Appeals.  By way of example, issues which routinely come up in my cases and I am able to successfully navigate for my clients include:

  • Matters that involve issues of valuation of a business or professional practice or other intangible asset in regard to which an expert accountant or business appraiser or other expert submits a written valuation or testifies at deposition or in a hearing or trial or attends a mediation or negotiation;
  •  Matters that involve issues of co-mingling of funds in regard to which an accountant or other expert traces funds and submits a written report or testifies at deposition or in a hearing or trial or attends a mediation or negotiation;
  • Matters that involve issues of excessive, abnormal, or fraudulent disposition of community funds or assets (community waste) in regard to which an accountant or other expert traces funds or assets and submits a written report or testifies at deposition or in a trial or hearing or attends a mediation or negotiation;
  • Matters in which a real estate appraiser submits a written appraisal or testifies at deposition or in a hearing or trial or attends a mediation or negotiation;
  • Matters that involve issues of spousal maintenance or child support in which a physician or vocational or labor market or rehabilitation expert or other expert submits a written report regarding a party’s ability to earn income or testifies at deposition or in a hearing or trial or attends a mediation or negotiation;
  • Matters that involve issues of child custody or parenting time in which a written child custody or parenting time evaluation is submitted or a mental health professional or other expert meets with children or parents, or attends mediation or negotiation, or otherwise assists in attempting resolution;
  • Matters that involve issues of valuation of a retirement plan, in regard to which an actuary or other expert submits a written report or testifies at deposition or in a trial or hearing or attends mediation or negotiation;
  • Matters that involve issues of community enhancement of the value of a separate business, professional practice, or real estate, in which an expert accountant or appraiser submits a written report regarding such issues or testifies at deposition or in a hearing or trial or attends mediation or negotiation;
  • Matters involving interstate jurisdiction issues, either as to long-arm personal jurisdiction or as to subject matter jurisdiction;
  • Special actions and appeals to the Arizona Court of Appeals;
  • Matters that are settled by alternate dispute resolution, which means mediation involving the participation of counsel, arbitration, or special master proceedings;
  • Matters in which I have served as mediator, arbitrator or special master.  I also serve as a Judge Pro Tem in Maricopa County and have presided over numerous settlement conferences and court hearings in the Maricopa County Superior Court;
  • Matters arising under the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction;
  • Matters involving allegations of child sexual abuse in which an expert submits a written report or testifies at a deposition or in a hearing or trial or attends a mediation or negotiation;

The experience I have gained in my current employment has allowed me to achieve my current distinction as one (1) of approximately seventy (70) Board Certified Specialists in family law in the entire State of Arizona.
